Invoking Ronald Reagan to win a Democratic primary????????????

Today James Webb invoked Ronald Reagan of all people in asking for the Democratic nomination.

WAVY

RICHMOND, Va. Former Reagan administration Navy Secretary James Webb said today he hopes to challenge not only G-O-P Senator George Allen -- but what he calls an "extreme" Republican Party that has strayed far from Reagan's ideal.

Webb said in a news conference in Richmond today that the Republican Party has ... quote ... "moved toward the extreme on social issues" in an attempt to keep a voter base.

It was precisely Ronald Reagan who delivered the Republican party into the hands of the theocratic right when he went to a convention of conservative evangelicals and said:

I know you can't endorse me, but I want you to know that I endorse you.

I realize that Reagan carried Virginia and remains very popular; but I think it a bit much to invoke Reagan in your announcement. Not since Owen Pickett invoked Harry Byrd Sr. in his announcement for Senate has a candidate gone so out of his way to insult the base of the Democratic party. No wonder Webb is avoiding local Democratic committees, he is not one of us.

Harris Miller for Senate

Comments:
I have been staying completely neutral in this election to this point. After all, I intend to support the nominee, whoever it might be. But this gives me the willies!

I saw your post, very well said. I am a Miller person, but I do think it is telling Webb did not see fit to mention Gov. MARK Warner or Gov. Tim Kaine.

Let's see what happens next. Persumably at some point he will have to present himself to some local Democratic Committee.

That might be the lead of the story, but it was a statement that he made late in his speech, and didn't dwell on; he hardly "[went] so out of his way." He simply pointed out that George Allen doesn't support the supposed ideals of his party, those ideals that are most closely recognized as those espoused by Ronald Reagan. As a member of the base, let me say that I hardly felt offended -- it sounded like good sense, to me.

Well, I don't see why he could not have left Reagan out of it all together.

It all strikes me as an historical revisionist view of Reagan.

Anyway, why not talk about Mark 75%-approval-rating Warner?

Hmmm, Webb talks about Reagan in his first public speech. Allen constantly refers to his Jeffersonian principles. Maybe Virginia pols are naturally bipolar or something. Do you know if Harris Miller has a Green or Libertarian party figure to look up to?

Do you know if Harris Miller has a Green or Libertarian party figure to look up to?

I have no idea, you could always ask him.

Alice, I hope you know that I was joking ;)

Conway this post had nothing to do with yours, just the stories linked.

Don't have any problem with your post.
